about

Another one I had initially written for that beach music movie. This soldier story is a classic Memphis 6/8 ballad, reminiscient of the great Memphis TN songwriter William Bell. Dedicated to folks who are serving (or have served) in the Military.

lyrics

I'm flyin' away
on a plane up in the sky
I'm flyin' away
but i had to say goodbye
and I know that you'll miss me
I'm gonna miss you too
I'm flyin' away
but i'm comin' home soon

Now I'm out in a field
far off in a foreign Land
I'm out in a field
with a rifle in my hand
and I know that you miss me
you know I miss you too
I'm out in a field
but i'm comin' home soon

I'll be home soon
(I can't stay away too long)
be home soon
(I'm comin' home, baby)
I'll be home soon
I'm comin' home soon

Looks like they got me
my platoon came under fire
looks like they got me
and I feel like I might die
I have someone to live for
and Doc says I'll pull through
I'm flyin' away
and I'm comin' home soon

I'll be home soon
(I can't stay away too long)
be home soon
(I'm comin' home, baby)
I'll be home soon
I'm comin' home soon

Greg Humphreys New York, New York

Humphreys’ projects have shared some common elements: His distinctive soulful rasp, channeling Sam Cooke; his tight, imaginative guitar work; and his gift for writing melodic, catchy, deceptively simple tunes. — Eddie Huffman, Winston-Salem Journal

Effortless and alluring… building his reputation cautiously but deliberately… his good fortune is all but inevitable. — Lee Zimmerman, No Depression
