My friend Brian Ashley Jones and I wrote this one together in Nashville TN one cold January afternoon. He provided the title; it sounded like an ancient murder ballad title to me, so we worked off of that and came up with a gem. I recorded it the next day with Gibb Droll, Eric Fritsch, and Aaron Oliva at Eric's Eastwood Studios.

hear a whip and the crack of gun.
Rustling leaves and the bay of a hound...

I found a man alone with my wife...
struck him down, and ran for my life.
My ear to the wall as they lay the ground...
I heard a low and meddlesome sound.

I hear them now they’re coming for me...
when i’m found, I’ll hang by a tree.
They’ll string me up, and they’ll drop me down...
